Of course this Not that I'm saying this is a bad thing at all, but definitely something to think about. Perhaps this was a financial move, as there seems to be a trend between the band hurting for cash and their music meandering back toward the mainstream. Of course the exploratory side of the band never disappeared, but the setlists became a bit more song-centric, and 1970 saw the introduction of acoustic sets. Of course American Beauty changed all this, and with its release in 1970 launched two years of country rocking Dead, with a side of their trademark weirdness. Just a few years before, they were playing acid tests and Haight-Ashbury with abstract, exploratory jams anchored to the blues tradition. This is an interesting period in the band's career.

I'm sure like many others, my first exposure to live Dead was Europe '72, three LPs of glorious, albeit overdubbed, live music from one of the greatest tours in the band's career. For this show, I decided to go with the era that got me, and probably most others, hooked on the band: '70-'72. I guess it's something about the transformation from winter to spring and ultimately to summer that makes me want to celebrate, and the Grateful Dead were one of the best parties around. While I'm not the hopeless deadhead that I used to be, I still find myself going through a Dead heavy phase every spring. For me, this band evokes a plethora of experiences, across a broad emotional spectrum. Widespread Panic with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band - Use MeĪh yes, the good ol Grateful Dead. Trey Anastasio Band - Cayman Review (8 Red Rocks Amphitheater)ġ4. Cedric Brooks & David Madden - Conquerorġ2. Karl Hector & The Malcouns - Followed PathĠ9.

Abdullah Ibrahim - Black and Brown CherriesĠ4. If yall need to get your hands on a playlist, just drop me a comment below.Ġ1. Tonight you'll hear the afrobeat-influenced big band swing of Abdullah Ibrahim, the insanely skilled Peruvian vocalist Yma Sumac accompanied by her husband's compositions, the salsa-laden soukous sound of Ricardo Lemvo, jazz fusion, ska and rocksteady, and some good old brass-soaked southern rock. I love the vibrant dimension that a tight brass section can add to bands across broad genres. This week's show was a collection of tracks only linked by the presence of a brass section. Hey yall, just have a couple more posts to get through and then I will be up to date. 6 - Runaway Jim (Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Portland, Oregon)Ġ2. Links to the original airing of the show and a playlist with just the song tracks is available below the tracklist, enjoy!Ġ1. Anyhow, I think this setlist pretty much speaks for itself. And of course, two hours of bonkers, absolutely ripping Phish is always important. I'll keep you in the loop on that, this next week is pretty busy but I promise a site and a show will be forthcoming. Also, this show is my first (of many) Phish radio hours, as I will be streaming all summer and next year out of Rhodes College with All Things Reconsidered, featuring solely music from The Phish from Vermont.
